Sales & Product Development Manager

Location: Hollister, CA

Job Purpose and Summary

Conducts full range of product development activities in territory described as Eastern USA of all varieties to be promoted in the Territory. This person will be expected to set up trial plots with local growers and to produce trial plans for the respective locations.  The person will also actively engage in promoting individual varieties to potential customers which includes end users as well as distributors. Supports breeder activities with placing trials to advance varieties for commercial use, replicate trials throughout the different growing regions to identify the best varieties for each region and use.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain good business relations with growers, seed dealers and processors.
  •  Plan and execute assigned product development activities related to field and greenhouse, including proper timing, labeling, mapping and placement. Maintain accurate records for all.
  • Assist in the sowing of trial seeds in greenhouse and related activities such preparing flats, thinning and watering.
  • Assist in all phases of field trial evaluations including assisting in selections of advancing varieties, harvest, yield determination, grading, sampling, transportation of fruit to laboratory and fruit quality testing. Generate reports or lists for these activities.
  • Present data to customers to objectively measure the potential of the advancing materials.
  • Supports breeding activity through establishing hybrid trials for the different crops in the different growing areas of the Territory.
  • Evaluate trials and record the necessary data to report to the breeders and management for the advancement of varieties.
  • Travel throughout Territory to visit dealers, customers, growers to support sales in the Territory.
  • Attend field days in USA or other countries as required to select varieties to be introduced in the Territory.
  • Prepare presentations and present to internal management and to external customers.
  • Assist in reviewing seed inventory of new varieties and maintain communication with breeders to confirm availability and timing for placement of future trials.
  • Provide input regarding changes or trends in the market that may affect use of inventory, create inventory and or otherwise cause a shift in the direction of breeding strategies.
  • Maintain and manage inventory of sample seeds utilized in trials and distribute to seed dealers for trialing purposes.

Position Dimensions and Qualifications

Internal Contacts:

Direct contact with Sales Manager and staff of UG, with Plant Breeders at UG USA and Europe, Pathology personnel, Marketing personnel, Customer Service personnel.

External Contacts:

Customers, Vendors, Breeders from other companies, Universities and Government institutions.

Educational Level and Focus:

  • Minimum, Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture or Science related field 
  • Experience   Minimum 3 yrs. experience in a seed industry, preferred in product development and/or sales experience.  
  • Highly recommended experience in farming
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office software including but not limited to Excel, Outlook and Word.
  • Familiarity simple data analysis.
  • Valid U.S. driverís license with good driving record with the ability to drive automobiles and pickup trucks for long distances and in remote areas.
  • Ability to work and travel overnight in the Eastern U.S.
